This stunning image of the George Markovich midget in the Claremont Speedway pits was taken by Peter Roebuck during the late 1960's. This is just one of the tens of thousands of images in Peter's photographic collection. This website is dedicated to Peter in appreciation of his remarkable 50 year involvement in speedway and his career behind the lens capturing the history of the sport in Western Australia.

Welcome to The Peter Roebuck Speedway Collection- Five Decades Behind The Lens.

Peter Roebuck's remarkable photograph collection is a true gem of previously unseen images of Western Australian speedway. This website is dedicated to the man who has been capturing the history of the sport for 50 years.

Peter kindly allowed me to scan some of the countless number of 35mm negative film rolls which form his collection. As a long-time speedway fan it has been a dream of mine to play a part in reviving such memorabilia on a sport that has been a part of Perth's history for around 90 years.

As I proceeded to uncover the contents of these rolls I was stunned by the quantity and the quality of the images. It didn't take me long to realise that I was scanning the history of the sport that very few, if anyone has seen.

This find in without doubt the biggest release of speedway images from this era. It was probably one of the biggest thrills of my life to be involved with producing this website. I am not going to expand on what I found on those rolls, I will leave the contents to each one of you to peruse.

For those who were lucky enough to witness the Claremont Speedway era from the 60's and 70's, this will provide wonderful memories. For the younger generation, these images are a true visual impression of the sport's heritage.

Peter then gave me permission to publically display his collection for all speedway fans to enjoy. I feel honoured to be given this privilege and I hope you enjoy some of the best speedway photographs from the last 50 years.

Please remember, these images are raw, straight from the negative film with no professional or preservation work. What you see is as real as it was decades ago. The individuals, the race machines, the atmosphere, the will be amazed!

As you can imagine after so many years the task of identifying those featured in these images has been a sometimes difficult process. With the expert assistance of speedway historian Ken Brown and long-time Claremont Speedway programme editor and commentator Brad Thompson we have perused through hundreds of Claremont programmes in an effort to match numbers with names and years. In some cases assistance from former competitors was sought.

Every effort has been taken to ensure that the information provided and captioning of images featured is as correct as possible.

However if you can provide further information please feel free to send me a message by clicking on the Guestbook page.

On behalf of all speedway fans I would like to thank Peter for his many years of dedication to the sport and his willingness and cooperation in allowing this website to become a reality.

So, sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.
